Soil expands and contracts with the seasons, and block paving flexes naturally with these shifts. Each concrete block paver can withstand compressive strengths exceeding 50 N/mm², significantly stronger than standard poured concrete used for garden paths. When installed correctly, a block paving path typically lasts 20 to 30 years under normal foot traffic.

We don't cut corners on foundation work, whether we're installing garden paths, block paving driveways, or block paving patios. A solid sub-base is what prevents sinking, spreading and uneven settlement over time. Our block paving installation process starts below ground level, where most problems either get prevented or created.

The longevity of any paved area depends entirely on the quality of the sub-base and drainage systems beneath it. We excavate to the correct depth, compact in layers, and ensure water has somewhere to go. Poor installation almost always results in movement or sinking within the first few years.

Ground preparation determines whether your path lasts three years or thirty years. We excavate to the required depth based on your soil type and expected use, typically 150 to 200mm for domestic paths.

The excavated area gets filled with compacted MOT Type 1 limestone. We compact this base in 50mm layers using a vibrating plate compactor. On top of the hardcore, we spread a 30 to 40mm layer of sharp sand as the bedding layer.

If your path needs to handle surface water, we can install permeable block paving. These systems reduce surface water runoff by up to 90 percent compared to traditional impermeable paving. The water drains through the joints and into the ground below, preventing pooling.

Concrete block paving remains the most cost-effective option and is the most commonly used material for garden paths. These blocks come in a huge range of colours and finishes.

The most commonly used block size is 200 × 100 × 50mm. This size provides strength, visual balance and pattern flexibility. For permeable paving installations, we use specially designed permeable block paving blocks with wider joints that allow faster drainage while maintaining structural strength.

Most domestic block paving pathway installation projects take two to three days to complete. Day one involves excavation and sub-base preparation. Day two covers laying the blocks. Day three handles edging, cutting, compacting and cleaning.

Weather affects our schedule. We can't lay block pavers in heavy rain or when the ground is frozen. The sand bedding layer needs to be dry for proper compaction.

Block paving can be installed over an existing concrete or tarmac base if it's structurally sound and correctly prepared. The existing surface needs to be stable, level and free from major cracks.

Installing over a good existing base typically reduces the project timeline by a day. However, we never compromise on quality just to save time. If the existing surface isn't suitable, we'll always recommend full removal.

Well-installed paving can add between 5 and 10 percent to a property's overall visual value by improving kerb appeal and garden usability. A neat, well-maintained path makes a strong first impression and suggests the rest of the property has been looked after.

Concrete block pavers are at the lower end of that range. Clay bricks and permeable paving systems cost more due to material prices and additional drainage work. Your budget determines which materials and design options suit your project.

Every block paving installation needs proper compaction to perform correctly. We use a vibrating plate compactor to lock the blocks together and set them into the sand bedding layer.

We compact the entire paved area at least twice. The first pass sets the blocks. The second ensures everything is level and stable. Skipping proper compaction is one of the most common installation mistakes we see.

Drainage systems are built into the installation rather than added afterwards. We set the path with a slight fall, usually 1 in 80, so water runs off to the sides or toward a drainage point.

For paths near buildings, we always ensure water drains away from the property. Where needed, we install drainage channels or direct runoff toward soakaways or existing drainage systems.

If individual blocks get stained, cracked or damaged, we can lift them out and replace them without disturbing the rest of the path. We lift them carefully to avoid chipping the edges, swap in new blocks, and compact them back into place.

This is far easier and cheaper than repairing concrete or tarmac, where you'd need to cut out a section and try to blend the repair into the existing surface.
